Medical Assistant

Summary/objective:

Medical assistants generally support the health care team by organizing and caring for the physical space in the wellness center, taking and recording vital sign information, and occasionally assisting with minor, office-based procedures.  

Essential functions

  • Helps patients by providing information, services, and assistance.
  • Maintains medical supplies inventory and performs preventive maintenance to keep medical equipment operating.
  • Verifies patient information by interviewing patient, recording medical history, and confirming purpose of visit.
  • Prepares patients for examination by performing preliminary physical tests; taking blood pressure, weight, and temperature; and reporting patient history summary.
  • Secures patient information and keeps patient information confidential.
  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
  • Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock, placing orders, and verifying receipt.
  • Keeps the Wellness Center organized and the patient care areas clean.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading professional publications.
  • Serves and protects the School by adhering to professional standards; facility policies and procedures, and federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Enhances School reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

Work environment

Physical demands

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Remain standing for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to traverse various areas of the facility (including unpaved areas, dirt paths, uneven terrain, stairs, etc.) to meet with students.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds unassisted.
  • Communication skills using the spoken and written word.
  • Ability to use a visual display terminal with continuous wrist movement on a keyboard.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example using a keyboard, sorting, etc.
  • Ability to administer CPR

Required education and experience

  • Basic understanding of infection control.
  • Prefer Medical Assistant certification but training can be provided.
  • Prefer previous experience with adolescents and their families.
  • Experience working with the range of adults tasked with supporting students.
  • Appreciation for and understanding of the complexities of counseling high school students in an international boarding school setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.

Additional eligibility requirements

  • Able to successfully complete CHRI, CORI, and SORI checks.

Schedule

Generally, 2-4 days a week, Sunday through Friday, from 5pm – 8pm, Saturday 8am - 11am, 10 months (end of August to beginning of June) per year with no work obligations the week of Thanksgiving and for two weeks each for our winter break and our spring break when students are not on campus.
